Check these three things first
Make sure the download has finished, that your phone has free storage, and that the installer shows the app you intended to install. Keep the existing app and its data while you investigate an update problem.
What the installation message can mean
| What you see | A useful next step |
|---|---|
| File cannot be opened / parse error | Check that it is a complete APK. An interrupted download, incompatible package or page saved as a file may not open in the installer. |
| Not enough storage | Check Settings → Storage. Make room for installation as well as the downloaded file; avoid deleting app data you still need. |
| Not allowed from this source | Review which browser or file manager opened the APK. Android grants installation permission per source on many devices. Allow it only after checking the source and app. |
| App not installed during an update | The installed app and package may be incompatible, differently signed or a different version direction. Confirm the correct update with the provider. |
| App is incompatible | Check the provider’s supported Android versions and device requirements. A different filename does not make an incompatible app compatible. |
| Harmful-app warning | Stop and review the warning. Keep Play Protect enabled and ask the provider for a verified package; do not force installation. |
Check for an incomplete or incorrect file
Open your browser’s Downloads list. A running, failed or paused entry has not finished. If the entry completed, check its filename and type in the Files app.
The APK response size was about 20.35 MB when checked on 11 September 2026. Use this as a reference when looking for an incomplete transfer. The file size can change after an update.
If the file is clearly incomplete, remove that partial download and try the download and installation steps again once on a stable connection. Do not rename an error page, ZIP archive or unrelated file to “.apk”.
Keep account access in mind before reinstalling
When an existing app will not update, preserve it while confirming the replacement package. An update can fail if the app identity or signing certificate differs, or if Android rejects the version being installed.
Do not start by uninstalling, clearing app data or installing an old package from an unknown source. Those actions can remove local information or create a new problem. Record the installed version if it is visible and ask the provider which update matches it.
If you also cannot sign in, work through login and recovery checks before a reinstall.
If installation still fails
Record your phone model, Android version, file name and the exact error. Explain whether this is a first installation or an update. Those details are more useful to support than repeatedly sending “not working”.
If the app identity differs from what you expected, pause here and read how to find and open the APK. Do not enter account details in a package you have not identified.
Android menu labels vary by manufacturer and release. Refer to Android Help or your phone manufacturer for device-specific settings.
